Burbank, CA: Walt Disney, 1948
Description:
Vintage reference photograph of an animation inker working on a cel of Pecos Bill for the 1948 animated film. Printed mimeo snipe affixed to the verso.
From the archive of film historian and author Joel Finler.
The last anthology feature made by Walt Disney Productions, and the last film to feature The Andrews Sisters trio.
Walt Disney's typical practice of not hiring women animators changed after World War II, although the position was still by and large held by men. The processes of inking and painting cels, however, were almost entirely performed by young women. Although inking and painting were integral to the animation process, male animators often disparaged the work, considering it unchallenging and uncreative, and inkers and painters were rarely credited in the finished films. The unseen women of the ink and paint department were the subject of a 2017 book, "Ink and Paint: The Women of Walt Disney's Animation."
