The dehorners can be utilized on calves from birth to eight weeks of age (depending on the breed of the animal and size of the bud). Make sure the animal is restricted or limited to head movement. Remove the protective cover and place the precision sharpened end over the horn bud. Push down and twist the dehorner back and forth to penetrate the skin and get to the base of the bud. When the skin has been penetrated and the tube can’t be pushed down any deeper, the bud should break off. Grab the artery between your thumb and forefinger, twist and hold for a few seconds and release. If you have a bleeder, use a pair of artery forceps to stop the bleeding. During fly season, or another vector type insect season, you need to have a fly spray or antiseptic available.
