Another item from Country Artifacts, Great Northern Liquidation, Springfield, Vermont.
Antique 4.5" Wrought Iron Cannonball Shaped Ornamental Ball Finial Counterweight
with Square Holes
This was found in an old Vermont estate.
This item weighs 11.95 pounds and is 4.5" diameter.
The square holes are filled with a hardened clay-like substance that a pin can penetrate (you will receive it with test pinholes in each square hole).  I wasn't able to determine how deep those holes go.  They may go all the way through to the one opposite.
There are markings on the side as shown, but we couldn't make them out.
There are hammer marks all over, and I don't see a clear mold line, so it appears to be wrought iron as opposed to cast iron.
Although it's very similar to a standard 12 pound 4.5" diameter cannonball used during the Civil War, we are told it is either a gate counterweight or a decorative ball, possibly for use with a wrought iron fence.  The square holes and markings being the main indicators.
Condition is good, with oxidation as shown.
